4 Questions you should be asking about your Minneapolis furnace this Fall

As the air gets colder and nights get longer, it’s time to start thinking about whether your furnace is ready for our tough Minneapolis winter. You’ll want it to keep your family warm and cozy this winter by planning ahead and evaluating your furnace. How can you determine if your furnace needs to be replaced or repaired?

We’ve got you covered with 4 questions to ask when considering a furnace replacement.

What is the age of your furnace?

On average, furnaces last between 15 to 20 years depending on how many times you have repaired it and changed the filter. Some repairmen and repairwomen have replaced 70 year old furnaces, but we don’t recommend you keep yours that long. Chances are you will save time and money if you replace your furnace around the 15 year mark.

Are your energy costs increasing?

The cost to keep running an old furnace can add up quickly. The cost of replacing your furnace may outweigh any repairs, not to mention your increasing utility bills. If the yearly cost to run your furnace is reaching higher than the cost to replace it, it’s probably time to replace your furnace.

What is its efficiency rating?

The most efficient furnace today is 98.5% efficient, which means that only 1.5% of the energy is being discarded as waste. A standard rule is if your furnace has a lower than 80% efficiency rating, it is time to replace that furnace. The cost to keep running that 20% of wasted energy will add up quickly.

Do you hear noises coming from your furnace?

A sure sign of a worn out furnace is noise. Any squeaking, rattling, or loud humming are signs of loose or failing parts in the furnace. Even if you are not looking to replace your furnace, these noises should be checked out by a local HVAC technician. If these noises happen frequently, it is a sure sign to replace your furnace.
